It is the result of the bacteria\nthat grows in the blood, sweat, and dirt that build up on hockey equipment over\ntime, and in addition to smelling horrible, it can also cause infections to\nspread. The only way to effectively deal with rink stink is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loveyourgear.ca\/\">give your hockey gear a good\nwash<\/a> and we\u2019re going to let you in on how to do\njust that!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loveyourgear.ca\/knowledge-base\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/hockey-equipment.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-279\" width=\"725\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to\nPrevent \u201cRink Stink\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prevention is a crucial component when it comes to combatting rink\nstink. Here are some preventative methods you can use to stop the stench on\nyour hockey equipment from getting out of hand:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Wear Full-Body Base Layers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using pants, socks, and shirts made of the appropriate compression\nor wicking material will create a much-needed barrier between you and your\nhockey gear. Base layers also effectively absorb the sweat and dead skin\nparticles that cause bacteria to grow and create unwanted odours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Always Dry Your Hockey Equipment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Habitually hanging your hockey gear on a drying rack after\npractice is an absolutely essential step to take to prevent bacteria from\ngrowing and spreading. Bacteria thrive in moist environments and drying racks\nallow for the optimal amount of air circulation, which effectively dries the\ngear and kills bacteria on it. Be sure to hang all your equipment, even your\nathletic bag, to ensure no bacteria is left behind!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Air Out Your Skates<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The soles of your feet have more sweat glands on them than any\nother part of your body, which leaves your skates extra vulnerable to acquiring\na stench. Make sure you remove your skate inserts, pull open the tongue on your\nskates, and give them a chance to air out after every use. These layers must be kept clean to prevent bacteria\nbuildup from getting past the point of no return. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00b7&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Machine wash your gloves,\nelbow pads, shoulder pads, shin pads, hockey pants, shorts, jersey, and jock at\nleast once a month. Since your base layer creates a barrier and absorbs most of\nyour sweat, your protective equipment doesn\u2019t have to be washed as frequently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00b7&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Use warm water, a gentle\ncycle, and regular detergent to clean your gear. This cycle will thoroughly\nclean your gear without ruining the materials.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00b7&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Use the \u201cpre-soak\u201d feature\nif your equipment is especially stinky. This will give your gear time to soak\nup the water and ensure it gets cleaned properly instead of just floating to\nthe surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00b7&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Make sure all Velcro\nclosures are securely fastened.
